Top 10 Largest Cities of the World [AREA]

We earlier shared a list of most populated cities of the world in 2011 which was appreciated by all of you. And now we bring you the largest cities of the world in terms of Area. Most of these cities do not have a large population living in them (except one) and the area is covered by mountains, forests and grounds. The list is dominated by Asian and South American cities and to our surprise does not have any city from Russia & United States of America which are among the largest countries of world area-wise.

10) La Tuque, Quebec, Canada


La Tuque, the city of Central Southern Quebec region of Canada is the tenth largest city of the world having an area of 29,696 square kilometers. It is located on Saint-Maurice River and has a population of  11,821 people (2006). The first language of about 95% people of the city is French.


9) Porto Velho, Rondonia, Brazil



The ninth largest city of the World is in Brazil. Porto Velho is the capital of Brazilian state, Rondonia and has an area of 34,082 square kilometers. The city is located on the border of Ronadonia and Amazonas, another state of Brazil. It has a population of over 425,000 people as per Brazilian Institute of Geography & Statistics (2010).


8) City of Mount Isa, Queensland, Australia



City of Mount Isa having area of 43,010 square kilometers is the eighth largest city of World. It is located in north west Queensland, Australia. City of Mount Isa has a population of 21,994 (2010) as per Australian Bureau of Statistics.


7) Leh, India


The seventh largest city of the world in terms of area is from one of the most populated countries of world, India. Leh is an Indian city with area of 45,110 square kilometers located in Ladakh, Indian administered Kashmir. It has a population of over 117,000 with Buddhists in majority (around 77%) according to the 2001 Indian census.


6) Wood Buffalo, Alberta, Canada



Wood Buffalo with the area of 63,343 square kilometers is the sixth largest city of the world. It is located in north eastern Alberta, Canada. It is the largest city of Canada in terms of area followed by La Tuque. Wood Buffalo has a population of around 52,000 people as per Statistics Canada (2006). The mother tongue of majority of its residents (85%) is English.


5) Corumbá, Brazil


The fifth largest city of the world is Corumbá having area of 65,000 square kilometers. It is located in Mato Grosso do Sul state of Brazil. Corumbá is the westernmost and northernmost city of Mato Grosso do Sul and has a population of 96,434 (2006).


4) Chongqing, China



Chongqing is the fourth largest city of the world with an area of 82,400 square kilometers. It is one of the major cities of Southwest China and is also one of the five national central cities of China. The population of thsi Chinese municipality is 28.84 million people (2010).



3) City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Western Australia, Australia



The third largest city of the world with an area of 95,575 square kilometers is Australian City known as City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder. It is located in Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia and is the largest city of the country.


2) Altamira, Pará, Brazil


Altamira is a Brazilian city with an area of 159,696 square kilometers, which makes it the second largest city of world in terms of surface area. It is also larger than the whole country of Greece which has an area of 131,990 square kilometers. Altamira is located in northern Brazil.


1) Jiuquan, Gansu, China



The largest city of the world is in the most populated country of the world. Jiuquan is a Chinese city with an area of 167,996 square kilometers, largest of any city in the world. It is located in westernmost region of the Chinese province called Gansu. Jiuquan has a population of around 1 million people (2002 census).
